Character Analysis
1. Location in Town

This area, which is predominately residential, is situated to the north east of the centre of Petersfield, which is some 10 minutes walk away. It is bisected by Ramshill (B2070), which is the main route into the centre of the town from the east (A272) and north (A3). The northern boundary is formed by the Sheet Link, which connects Ramshill with the Petersfield by-pass (A3). Churcher’s College, with its extensive playing fields, occupies most of the area to the south of Ramshill. The only commercial properties are the Esso Petrol Station and a Salon, which are situated on Ramshill opposite Churcher’s College. Between Kingsfernsden Lane, the railway and the Sheet Link is an area called Broadlands, which is an area of farming land (grazing) and a small housing development. The Herne Farm housing estate lies to the south of the area.

2. Vistas/Views

Those travelling along the Sheet Link to join the by-pass have splendid views of the Hanger to the north of Petersfield. There are glimpses of the South Downs from some of the houses on Shear Hill, Churchfield Road, Merryfield Road and Hazelbank Close, albeit sometimes only from the second floors.

3. Landscaping

There are many trees in the area, mainly in gardens, some of which are large, notably on Shear Hill and in Love Lane. Although not as many as in the past, there are several large trees in the grounds of Churcher’s College.

4. Building Characteristics

Much of the housing dates from the end of WWII and is typical of that era - two storey, with medium size gardens. As far as Churcher’s College is concerned, whilst the main building is old, there have been several additions during recent years of a far more modern, and questionable, design.

5. Building Materials

As would be expected, most of the houses are built of brick, mainly red, with tiled roofs. The Esso petrol station and shop are typical of this type.

6. Roofs

Most roofs are tiled.

7. Special Features & Landmarks

As already noted, there are fine views to the north and south, visible from some vantage points. There is no shortage of trees, some of which are fine specimens.

8. Sustainability

A few homes have solar panels on their roofs.

9. Short summary description of area

Estate Agents describe the area as either “highly desirable”, or “much sought after”!

10. Main issues and recommendations

Whilst not a problem at present, there is always the concern that developers might seek to obtain planning permission to build on some of the Churcher’s College playing fields. This has already taken place where a row of houses (Churcher’s Close) was built in Love Lane a few years ago. Other targets might be the very large gardens on Shear Hill and in Love Lane.
