Character Analysis
1. Location in Town

Area 5 is on the North East side of Petersfield and is bounded by Kingsfersden Lane and the railway and makes up what is known as the ‘popular’ Ramshill Estate. It is within a 2 minute drive to the A3 trunk road, a 20 minute walk to the station and 10 – 15 minute walk to the town centre. There is one main entrance/exit road into the estate off of College Street. The area is a new housing development with few green areas. This development was, at that time, the largest of it’s kind in East Hampshire and an Urban design consultant was brought in to help with the design in this area. This consultation allowed some mature hedgerows to be preserved and the original boundary in the North East of the area was moved back away from the railway line to protect some local wildlife.

2. Vistas/Views

There are no views of importance; the houses backing onto the railway line have views blocked by tall fencing, whilst the houses near Kingsfersden Lane are lined by trees. Other houses simply overlook each other. Some on the East side do have a limited view of the Downs.

3. Landscaping

Very little tends to line the roads of this new estate, although there is obvious pride in most front gardens which tend to be in keeping with modern house and garden fashions. The main entrance road is pleasantly planted out with shrubs and flowers and tress have been intermittently planted around the estate and once established will have a more pleasing effect. The green space is under the control of a management company who do very little with the area and certainly there is no encouragement for it to be used as a kick about area or for people to sit and relax.

4. Building Characteristics

There is a real diversity of buildings through out Ramshill, apartments, flats; 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses which are a mixture of semi-detached, detached, terraced and town houses. Some have garages, some car ports and others have parking spaces. All houses are double glazed and some have bay, Dormer or Velux windows.

5. Building Materials
Primarily built during 2004 through 2006 all houses are of modern structure and design but throughout Ramshill you do not see uniformity at all. There are many types of different finishes, some houses have a brick finish, others are rendered, some are a mixture of the two. Colour plays a big part as well with deep reddish brown, pink, cream and blue all being used and that with a mixture of house type makes everything look fresh and interesting.
6. Roofs
All roofs are either dark grey slate or red tiled. Some have Velux or Dormer windows.
7. Special Features & Landmarks

This area does not really contain any special features or landmarks.

8. Sustainability
There is little in the way of sustainability, but all collection services are unobtrusive until day of collection.
One wonders why more features like solar panels where not installed by the developers especially as the houses are so new!
9. Short summary description of area
For a fairly large estate the design was well planned and the mixture of house type and style make it a pleasant place to live. Thoughtfully created front gardens by most residents also add interests.
10. Main issues and recommendations

Lack of parking is a main issue as most households have more than one car, with only one parking space the roads become congested with parked cars.

More could be done to plant out the three main grass areas within the estate.

A post box within the estate would be useful, especially near the bungalows with elderly residents.

Speed humps to slow down drivers on the main access road.

Dog litter bins.

The main entrance road opposite Churchers College should be made no parking or waiting. It is total chaos at the beginning and end of the school day with parents using it as tuning point and parking area waiting for the children. For residents this is a major issue when you are trying to get to work in the morning.

The cycle route from Kingsfersden Lane, through to Skinners Lane and into town to be complete.

The pedestrian only access to Bulmer House to be complete.
